Wildly Innovative: How We Help Zoos and Sanctuaries of all Sizes Thrive

In the world of zoo and wildlife sanctuary design, every project is a thrilling adventure – whether it’s large or small! At Epsten Group, we are committed to supporting zoos and wildlife sanctuaries of all sizes, offering our expertise to ensure that every animal and facility benefits from our innovative, holistic design approach. Our work reflects our belief that every project, regardless of scale, deserves our dedicated attention and creative solutions.

Championing Animal Wellness in Every Design

At the core of our design philosophy is a commitment to animal wellness. We understand that designing for animals requires more than just creating visually appealing spaces. Our approach prioritizes the well-being of the animals by focusing on their physical needs, comfort, and overall health. By designing exhibits that enhance the animals’ ability to thrive, we ensure that they live as naturally as possible under human care.

This holistic “inside-out” approach extends beyond the animals to include the keeper and curator staff. We create environments that support their safety and ongoing needs, allowing them to perform their duties effectively while maintaining a harmonious relationship with the animals. Our designs not only cater to the animals and their caretakers but also enhance the visitor experience, offering educational opportunities and fostering a deeper connection between people and wildlife.

Epsten Group’s Commitment to Zoo Projects of all Sizes

Our recent projects, such as those with the Salisbury Zoo and Zoo Atlanta showcase our dedication to supporting exhibits of all sizes. The Andean Bear exhibit at Salisbury Zoo exemplifies our approach of designing functional and enriching habitats. The 14,000 sf project includes the demolition of the existing habitat and the design of a new exhibit. It will include 3 main yards to mimic the forest of Ecuador, a climate controlled main building that includes 6 holding dens and two off exhibit areas for keepers that have storage space and a medical area. The Zoo Atlanta African Lions’ habitat renovation highlights our focus on the visitor’s experience as well as the skillful design process when repurposing materials. This 12,500 sf project includes new upper and lower viewing areas with large viewing gazing, a water feature, shade areas, new fencing, and improved vegetation. We are focused on the modernization and sustainability of the habitat. Both projects continue to evolve as we tailor our designs to meet the specific needs of each zoo.

Our work with Earthfire Institute Wildlife Sanctuary is a larger Grizzly bear habitat project in Tetonia, Idaho. The 217,800 SF habitats and care quarters were design to be as self-sufficient as possible utilizing off the grid technologies such as rainwater harvesting and renewable energy systems. The habitats include waterfall features, viewing areas for close-up interactions to emphasize a deep connection with the animals. This project demonstrates our ability to create immersive and engaging environments that support the health and well-being of the animals while captivating visitors.

Tailored Design Services for Zoos and Sanctuaries

Our design services are grounded in the principles of Comfort, Companionship, Challenge, and Choice. These elements are essential in crafting habitats that not only meet the animals’ physical and psychological needs but also provide a stimulating and supportive environment for caretakers and visitors. We are proud members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and design to the AZA standards with a commitment to wildlife conservation and animal care.

We also excel in assisting with conceptual design and graphic elements necessary for successful fundraising and grant pursuits. By integrating these components into our design process, we help sanctuaries and zoos present their projects in a compelling manner, enhancing their chances of securing the support needed to bring their visions to life.

Looking Ahead: Epsten Group’s Continued Dedication to Zoos and Wildlife Sanctuaries

As we explore new opportunities our dedication to zoos and wildlife sanctuaries of all sizes remains steadfast. At Epsten Group, we approach each project—big or small—with creativity and commitment, ensuring our designs enhance animal wellness and community engagement.

We pride ourselves on adapting our expertise to meet the unique needs of every client, delivering exceptional designs that enrich the lives of animals and the experiences of their caretakers and visitors.
