At Epsten Group, sustainability isn’t just about constructing new spaces—it’s about reimagining and revitalizing existing ones to better serve the environment, the community, and the inhabitants within. Our recent renovation of the African lion habitat at Zoo Atlanta, in collaboration with Breedlove Land Planning, who led the master planning and landscape architecture effort, exemplifies this ethos, transforming a cherished habitat into a modern, sustainable sanctuary that enhances animal welfare and visitor engagement.
A Pride Reunited: The Story of Azizi, Hondo, and Hatari
Central to this transformation are Azizi, Hondo, and Hatari, three male African lions and brothers who have been inseparable since birth. Born in 2014, these siblings have grown together, exhibiting strong social bonds that are rare among male lions. Their close-knit relationship has been a focal point for Zoo Atlanta’s animal care team, who employ positive reinforcement training and innovative enrichment strategies to support their physical and mental well-being.
The redesigned habitat was thoughtfully crafted to cater to the unique dynamics of this trio, providing ample space and features that encourage natural behaviors and social interaction.
Sustainable Design Meets Animal Welfare
Rather than building anew, our approach focused on repurposing and expanding the existing habitat, a decision that significantly reduced environmental impact by minimizing demolition waste and preserving the embodied carbon of the original structure. The renovation added approximately 1,500 square feet of enriched space, completed within a $3 million budget over a six-month timeline.
Key enhancements include:
- An in-habitat pool, offering the lions a place to cool off and engage in natural behaviors.
- Three distinct viewing areas, including an elevated observation deck with seating, providing visitors with immersive and varied perspectives of the lions in their environment.
- Naturalistic landscaping and shaded resting zones, designed to mimic the lions’ native savanna habitat, promoting comfort and behavioral enrichment.
Collaborating closely with BLP and Breedlove Land Planning, we also integrated sustainable features such as improved stormwater management and natural ventilation systems, aligning with Zoo Atlanta’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Enhancing the Visitor Experience
The renovated habitat not only benefits its feline residents but also elevates the educational and emotional experience for guests. The new design fosters a deeper connection between visitors and the lions, emphasizing the importance of conservation and the role each individual plays in protecting wildlife.
Through interactive elements and strategic viewing points, guests gain insight into the lions’ behaviors, social structures, and the challenges they face in the wild, fostering empathy and a greater appreciation for these majestic animals.
A Legacy of Collaboration and Conservation
This project marks another milestone in our enduring partnership with Zoo Atlanta, contributing to their broader vision of a revitalized African Savanna zone that includes habitats for elephants, giraffes, zebra, ostrich, warthog, meerkat and rhinos. Our collaborative efforts reflect a shared dedication to creating spaces that are not only sustainable and functional but also deeply enriching for both animals and humans.
