A Path to Purpose
John graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May 2024 with a degree in environmental science—but figuring out how to apply that education was a journey all its own.
“I really had no idea what I wanted to do after college,” John shares. “So I spent every summer exploring something new.”
That exploration took him from Glacier National Park to the woodlands of Central Wisconsin, conducting hands-on research in forest and aquatic ecology. “I loved learning about ecosystems and restoration, but I also learned something important—I don’t love mosquitoes,” he laughs.
The summer after his junior year marked a turning point. John interned at a local water and wastewater district back home in Texas, diving into everything from bird surveys and invasive species tracking to regulatory analysis and board meetings. “That summer helped me break into the public sector and really see the practical impact of environmental work.”
That real-world relevance stuck with him. Today, John is a Sustainability Specialist with Epsten Group, working alongside our team of LEED experts to help projects meet their sustainability goals. “I’m grateful to be starting my career here as I do meaningful work in a supportive environment.”
A Day in the Life
As a junior reviewer, John spends much of his time immersed in project documentation, ensuring each submission aligns with sustainability requirements. “My typical day includes reviewing LEED credits, analyzing documentation, collaborating with senior team members, and learning more about the technical and strategic elements of certification,” he says.
It’s detailed, diligent work—but John finds meaning in the process. “Even if my role is behind the scenes, I know I’m contributing to projects that will have real-world environmental impact.”
To recharge during the workday, John enjoys taking midday walks through Centennial Olympic Park, just steps from Epsten Group’s Atlanta office. “It’s one of my favorite things to do—it gives me a moment to reset and come back with a fresh perspective,” he shares.
The Bigger Picture
“Sustainability is such a big topic in today’s world. It’s about shaping a future that’s not just functional, but thoughtful,” John says. He sees his work as a small but meaningful step in a much larger movement, making the built environment better for everyone—now and into the future. What keeps John motivated is the knowledge that his work matters—even in the smallest details.
“I’m passionate about showing up every day knowing I’ve made a difference. That might be through improving documentation, supporting a teammate, or just contributing to a project that helps move the industry forward.”
Looking Ahead
John is excited about what’s next: earning his LEED accreditation, deepening his technical knowledge, and continuing to support sustainability from the inside out. “I’m passionate about showing up every day knowing that I’ve made a difference, even if it’s just one detail at a time.”
John’s journey is proof that sometimes the best career paths are the ones you don’t plan—but fully embrace. “I’ve been lucky to find a place where I feel challenged, supported, and connected to a bigger mission,” he says. “And I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
