Trader’s Alley Exhibit, Zoo Atlanta

Trader’s Alley Exhibit, Zoo Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia

Project Description

Zoo Atlanta’s Trader’s Alley complex includes the renovation and modernization of the existing 20-year old open-air Sumatran Tiger holding building into an enclosed, heated and air-conditioned facility, and the addition of a new holding area for Malayan Sun Bears. The project also includes a complete renovation of the existing Sumatran Tiger exhibit yard, an upgrade of the existing animal containment perimeter, the addition of a new Sun Bear exhibit yard, and the construction of a separate holding building and 420 square foot aviary exhibit for the zoo’s Asian Hornbills. The project’s Indonesian-inspired design includes a 550 square-foot raised viewing terrace located directly over the tiger holding facility’s Sun Bear addition. Along the exhibit exterior boundaries, several new visitor experiences were created including “bamboo viewing areas” constructed of steel pipe and rebar sculpted and painted to look like bamboo that will allow visitors to view the tigers and bears without glass barriers.
